Edward Tanner Home

1030 Grove Street

Date Built:

  • 1865

Architectural  Style:  Greek Revival

  • This was a simple cottage given some details to give it architectural significance.

  • The cornice has been designed to create a Greek Revival feature.

  • The small under-eave window in the west wing is close to the floor on the inside (so they are called “lie-on-your-stomach windows” or “belly windows”, since that is how to see out of them).

  • There are tall first story windows, a rectangular transom and sidelights around the front door, and classic-style lintels above most of the windows.

Who has lived here:

  • Mr. Tanner was the first child born in Waverly and was educated at Illinois College. He eventually returned to IC to teach Latin language and literature, becoming the fourth president in 1882.
