Maple Dale

 

Date Built:  1848, expanded 1863

Architectural Style:  Italianate

  • The house has a low-pitched hip roof, with wide eaves.

  • There are tall narrow first floor windows.

Who has lived here:

  • Colonel James Dunlap farmed and owned a country store on the north side of the square.

  • Col. Dunlap also built the first railroad in the state which started in Meredosia in 1838, and completed its route in Springfield in 1845.

Interesting Notes:

  • The northwest section of the house, built in 1848, was constructed of brick made on the grounds.
