Architectural Style:  Queen Anne, Victorian and Spindlework

  • Note the spindle-craft on the front porch, and on the west side.

Who has lived here:

  • John Hoffman, a railroad worker, originally built the house. 

  • Members of his family occupied the house until 1962 when the property was sold to the current owners.

Interesting Notes:

  • Mr. Hoffman moved to Jacksonville to become ticket agent/telegrapher for the Alton railroad after an accident at work forced the amputation of his right forearm and he could no longer serve as a railroad fireman. 

  • He was killed in 1904 when he was run over by a switch engine going 4 m.p.h.
