Gates Strawn Home

1605 Mound Avenue

Date Built:  1909-1912

Architectural Style:  Spanish Mission Style

  • The Spanish Mission style has a red-tiled roof  with large over-hanging eaves.

  • The stucco exterior is without surface ornamentation.

Who has lived here:

  • The house was built by Gates Strawn, the son of cattle baron Jacob Strawn.

  • Although he received a law degree, Gates never practiced law since he did not have to earn his living.

  • He spent his life traveling and pursuing his special interest in art and did not build the house until he was 68 years old.

  • While local builder Joseph DeGoveia was building the house, Mr. Strawn rented a house across the street so he could personally supervise the building of his new home.
