Date built: 1874,  with massive renovation in 1931 or 1932

Architectural Style:  Italianate originally, but renovation turned it into a Tudor Revival dwelling

  • The house has a steeply pitched roof.

  • Decorative half-timbering with stucco are on the facade.

Who has lived here:

  • Rufus C. Crampton built the home while he was a professor at Illinois College; he later became college president. 

  • Crampton lived there until his death in 1888.

  • A banker, Andrew Russel, who had been Illinois State Treasurer and a chairman of the Illinois College Board of Trustees, also lived there. 

  • Russel was involved in the failure of the Ayers Bank during the Great Depression and ended up serving a prison term.
