Rufus C. Crampton built the
home while he was a professor at Illinois College; he later became college president.

Crampton lived there
until his death in 1888.

banker, Andrew Russel, who had been Illinois State Treasurer and a
chairman of the Illinois College Board of Trustees, also lived
there.

Russel was involved
in the failure of the Ayers Bank during the Great Depression and
ended up serving a prison term.
