Date built:
approximately 1939
Architectural
Style: Garrison Colonial
Interesting Notes:
-
Originally this area
was the site of a large home named Fairview, built in the
early 1830’s by Judge Samuel Lockwood.
-
Fairview has bee said to
be the highest point in Morgan County, but this is very debatable.
-
The mansion had good
views to the north and west, and was screened by a wooded grove to
the south and east.
-
It is said that
there were no neighbors except birds and squirrels and that it was
“far from the noise of the turnpike” -- the “turnpike” is now called
College Avenue!
-
The mansion was
given to Illinois College in 1927 so that it could be used for the
care and education of the women of the college, but that never
happened because the college acquired property closer.
-
The original house
was demolished in 1939,
and the property was divided into smaller house lots.
